Who is that guy on the penny? Why did they use his face on the penny? Couldn't they find a more attractive guy or did he just have the right profile that they wanted. Maybe you do know that Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president. Did you know that Illinois is known as the "Land of Lincoln" because he was so important in American history? Abe Lincoln is also known as honest Abe. Did you know that he was a Godly guy?
He believed in equal rights for all people. He had been around alot longer than Martin Luther King Jr. Abe Lincoln freed the slaves. It didn't matter that some guys have white skin and others black. He believed in freedom for all. For standing up for what he believed in, he faced death. In fact, when he was sitting in a theater, someone decided to kill him even though he was the president of the United States.
"Chronicles of Faith: Abraham Lincoln" is written like a novel for kids. It uses historical information and presents in a kid friendly format. Through the use of this book, you can learn more about this famous American without studying a History textbook. After reading this book, I now have a new appreciation for this slave freer president. Way to go, Abraham!

Perhaps you have heard of Ruth, she is one of the most famous women in the Bible. But you're a kid and want to read the story in a way you understand. "Chronicles of Faith" take historical figures and tell their story in a kid friendly way. The books read like novels but are very easy to read. This series has been created for kids ages 8-12. With larger print words and illustrated with many pictures, the stories read easily.
The story opens with Ruth holding a baby. She had lost her husband and wondered how she would go on. Her fomer mother-in-law Naomi and sister-in-law Orpah are by her side. Naomi tries to encourage the two widows to return to their homeland and families. She feels that the young women would be better off without her and perhaps will each find other husbands. Orpah listens while Ruth clings to Naomi's side.
With God's guidance, Naomi and Ruth travel to Naomi's homeland. Naomi encourages Ruth to glean in the fields not knowing the fields are owned by a relative who can redeem the land and Ruth could still have the family and prosperity that she desires.
If you wish you could understand more of just what happened in the story of Ruth, you need to pick up this book. Based on Biblical facts, you are sure to learn some things that you may have missed in Sunday School or Bible Class. Its amazing how preservance and God's guiding hand can change the course of what looks like certain disaster.

Mind the Light Katie
Title: Mind the Light Katie
Authors: Mary Louise Clifford and J Candace Clifford
Published by Cypress Communications, 2006.
ISBN: 0-96364-12-7-1.
Katie Walker is a pioneer in her own way. I know you are saying "who is she? I have never heard of her. Katie Walker was thrown into the role of lighthouse keeper out of necessity. Her son Jacob had to row Katie's husband John to Staten Island for medical treatment from their lighthouse at Robins Reef Lightstation, New York City. John's last words "mind the light, Katie" are the the title of a fascinating book about lighthouses, their importane and some of the women who became official lighthouse keepers, not a very feminine position and not a high paying job either.
"Women Who Kept the Lights: An Illustrated History of Female Lighthouse Keepers" is a very popular book for grownups to read. "Mind the Light Katie" offers a smaller version and easy to read account of 33 women who held this non-traditional position. Many of these women fought incredible odds to gain official recognition as a keeper of the light. Sometime the daughters of lighthouse keepers would find their husband by assisting men in keeping the lights burning bright. They may at times have married sons of lighthouse keepers or the men who were old enough to be their own fathers.
I think girls ages 12 and up would love to read about women who fought for equality and success in doing "man's work." I have always liked seeing different lighthouses and like learning about the "olden days." I don't think I could have been like any of these women, since they must have gotten terrible lonely working by themselves 365 days a year. Anything men can do, women can do better or at least as well in lighthouse keeping!

Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria
Author: Kyra E Hicks
Published by Brown Books Publishing, 2007
ISBN: 978-1-933285-59-7
Reviewed for ReaderViewKids.com
"Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria" is a terrific picture book for kids. The story is based on the true story of Martha Ann Ricks. I loved reading about how her Martha Ann's father saved money in a red box. He was able to get his family out of slavery. My favorite part of the story was when she taught kids at the local mission where her husband Sion worked.
It was exciting when she got to meet Queen Victoria because of her beautiful big quilt.
The pictures is this book are great. The illustrator Lee Edward Fodi does a great job in showing what it was like in the 1800's from the fashions to the hairstyles. More books should be written based on true stories like this one.

Penny from Heaven
Title: Penny From Heaven
Author: Jennifer L Holm
Published by Random House, 2006
Reviewed for Amazing Kids
ISBN-10: 037583687X
Penny is a girl who lives in New Jersey with her widowed mother. She knows she has alot to deal with but is trying her best. The year is 1953 and not everything is as swell as it appears. She has a strange but fun relationship with Uncle Dominic who lives in his car outside of Grandma Falucci's house. He shares his love of the Brooklyn Dodgers with her and they listen to many games on the car radio. He gives her a lucky bean which he had gotten from her father and it is supposed to keep bad things from happening to her. Why won't anyone tell her how her father died?
Like most families during that time, they share their houses. Me Me and Pop-Pop are her grandparents that live upstairs from Penny, her mother, and Scarlett O'Hara the poodle, They share their meals together and they look after her while Penny's mother works at the hospital. Pop-Pop is a war veteran who is going deaf, sometimes he hears things strangely.
Penny also is allowed to spend time with her father's Italian and Catholic family. She discovers some unusual tastes in food such as eating calf brains and cow stomachs. Aunt Gina doesn't want Penny to learn Italian because of things that happened during World War II. A new red coat is given to Penny from Uncle Nunzio's factory. Penny's closest friend is her cousin Frankie. Just how far Frankie decides to take advantage of Penny's friendship remains to be seen throughout the book.
Penny must also deal with her mother beginning to date the milkman, Mr Mulligan. No matter how Penny acts when Mr Mulligan is around, he is not discouraged and keeps coming around. When Penny's arm gets caught in the wringer washer, her relationship gets a chance to grow with him and many secrets about the past get uncovered.
I really liked this book! I have some cousins that are part Italian and I liked to learn more about Italian customs. This book is more than just a history book but also adds a touch of romance and mystery to it. There were times when reading this book, that I laughed out loud. I can see why this book was named a Newberry Honor Book. This is a terrific book for ages 9-12.

The Ghost in Allie's Pool
Title:"The Ghost in Allie's Pool"
Author: Sari Bodi
Published by Brown Barn Book, 2007.
ISBN: 978-097681226-6-1.
Did your best friend ever abandon you to be one of the "in crowd?" Marissa and Allie have been best friends for many years. What makes Marissa prefer being with Crystal and Suzanne rather than Allie?
Allie has been researching the people who came over on the Mayflower for a project at school. She is positive that she has an ancestor who was aboard the Mayflower on its voyage to America. Marissa thinks Allie is obsessed with finding out more about her ancestry than being popular and accepted into "the group" before entering high school next year. Allie is surprised when she throws her friendship necklace into the pool and meets Dorothy May. Allie is the only one can talk to and see this ghost.
"The Ghost in Allie's Pool" by Sari Bodi is very intriguing. You find yourself hoping that the ghost can help the two friends make amends. This is a very imaginative story which is very hard to put down until you reach its last page. Talking to a ghost is like a fantasy but at least Allie gets some answers to the questions that are bugging here. Take a plunge and meet Allie and the ghost in her pool!
